Let there be light

I got the opportunity a couple of years ago to help my friends with the foyer in their beautiful home.  The house was built well and solidly in the 1960's, but the foyer was dark and not seemingly the quality of the rest of the home.  They wanted a southern old house feel, of tradition and graciousness, and to open it up without changing the footprint.  We decided on opening up the doorways to double size and to have open transoms over each.  We changed the moldings to a more substantial size and had to completely redo the staircase.  It is open, lovely, and feels like it belongs to the house.

We decided to add a mirror over the new front doors to continue the illusion of a transom, as we could not break into the exterior brick.  The double french doors on the right side have an open transom.

The lovely living room that adjoins the foyer.

Opening up this doorway made all the difference!

Pretty wainscoting.

Outstanding ceramic tile with granite inserts.

From the living room into the foyer.

We found this piece at an antique shop for a song.  We actually felt guilty that we paid so little.  For about a minute.

My favorite view.....from the hall upstairs.

Before.....foyer into family room.

Before....front doors.
